Joshua was Moses' attendant. Throughout the forty years on the wilderness road, he quietly learned in his mentor's shadow. When Moses went up Mount Sinai, Joshua waited at the foot of the mountain; even after Moses left the tent of meeting, Joshua would not leave it. Glory belonged to Moses; he stayed at his side.
Yet at a decisive moment, he was the one who spoke a voice different from the majority. When ten of the twelve who had scouted Canaan tried to shake the people, saying, 'There are giants, we cannot go in,' only Joshua and Caleb cried out, 'The Lord is with us; we can certainly conquer it.' Because of that one line, he became one of the only two people who would set foot in the promised land after forty years in the wilderness.
After Moses died on the plains of Moab, the task of leading the people fell onto his shoulders. The first thing he did was cross the Jordan River. The instant the feet of the priests carrying the ark touched the water, the river stopped, and the people crossed on dry ground. Before the walls of Jericho, seven marches replaced the sword as their weapon. In his old age, he gathered the people and issued his final challenge: 'Choose today whom you will serve. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.' A man who had learned for a lifetime at someone else's side finally set the direction of his own household with one decisive sentence.
