David was the youngest of Jesse's eight sons in Bethlehem. When the prophet Samuel came to anoint a new king, no one in the family even thought to call him in. He was the forgotten youngest, out in the field tending sheep. But God saw the heart that no one else could see, and there he became king.
He first made his name known before Goliath. While the entire army of Israel trembled before the giant, the boy David went out with only five stones from a sling. No armor, no sword, no shout of an army — his only weapon was 'the name of the living God.' From that day he became the king's son-in-law, and eventually king of a united Israel.
But the most unforgettable scene of his life was not glory but downfall. After becoming king, an impulsive desire born of seeing a woman from his rooftop led to adultery and murder. When the prophet Nathan came with a parable and confronted his sin head-on, David did not make excuses. 'I have sinned against the Lord.' That one honest sentence brought him back to life. Psalm 51 is the record of the tears he shed that day. David was called 'a man after God's own heart' not because he never sinned, but because he never ran from his sin.
