around 1010 BC · David's years as a fugitive

Abigail was the wife of the wealthy landowner Nabal. Scripture describes her as 'intelligent and beautiful,' but in the same verse it writes that her husband Nabal was 'surly and mean in his dealings' — an extreme contrast within one household. She lived under the shadow of a foolish husband.

One day, while the fugitive David and his 600 men were in the wilderness, they protected Nabal's farmhands. At harvest time, when David asked for provisions, Nabal refused insultingly, and the enraged David set out with his sword to destroy his household. When a servant told Abigail what had happened, she loaded bread and wine and rode out at once, without a word to her husband.

Her words as she fell before David were like a poem. 'Let this guilt be on me, my lord... the Lord will surely make my lord a lasting house, so that my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed.' Her every word cooled David's fury, and in the end he laid down his sword. Ten days later Nabal died suddenly, and David proposed to her. The wisdom that had been locked away in the darkest corner of one household was finally moved to the king's side.

She stood in the way of her foolish husband's course. She kept David's hand from blood, and changed the current with a single meeting.
