Deborah was the only woman among Israel's judges. During the dark twenty years when King Jabin's oppression weighed down Israel, she sat under a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel, judging the people's disputes. No army, no royal title, no political office — only the footsteps of those who came seeking her wisdom made her a judge.
One day she summoned the army commander Barak and told him, 'The Lord commands you: take ten thousand men and go up to Mount Tabor.' But Barak hesitated: 'If you will not go with me, I will not go.' She answered without hesitation, 'I will go with you.' And she truly did go out to the battlefield.
At the Kishon River, Sisera's nine hundred iron chariots were destroyed, and the fleeing Sisera was killed by a woman named Jael in a tent. After the war ended, Deborah and Barak sang together. The entire fifth chapter of Judges is the poem she composed. A mother of warriors and a mother of song — a place where strength and beauty flowed naturally together in one life.
