A woman the king sent for — a prophetess who, from Jerusalem's Second Quarter, set the direction of an era.
Huldah was an ordinary woman living in Jerusalem's Second Quarter. Her husband Shallum was in charge of the king's wardrobe, and Scripture gives no further detail about her — only 'the prophetess Huldah.' Jeremiah and Zephaniah were active in the same period, but on the day the forgotten book of the Law was discovered in the Temple and King Josiah tore his clothes, it was to her that the king sent his men.
What she did was not answer with her own authority. 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel...' She simply delivered the word of the One who sent it. And that word had two threads within it. Judgment — the curses written in the book would surely come — but also mercy — for the king who had humbled himself and torn his clothes, there would be a reprieve until the time of peace. She delivered both messages separately, precisely, in a single breath.
After that one word, Josiah gathered the people to read the Law, tore down idols, and turned back an era. The most magnificent Passover since the days of the judges was kept in that time. Yet the beginning of all that reform was one woman's single word. Scripture records her only once. A person for whom one appearance was enough. A depth that had been holding fast to the word in an unrecognized place shook a nation at a decisive moment.
