Noah
“Noah simply did.”
One man's faithfulness in building an ark for a hundred years, in an age when it had never once rained.
Noah lived in an age when the earth was filled with violence. Scripture describes that era: 'God saw that the earth was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.' Yet in the middle of it, one man lived by a completely different rhythm. 'Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD... Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation.' The most different man in the darkest age.
One day a command came to him: 'Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.' A massive vessel — three hundred cubits long, fifty wide, thirty high (about 135 meters). When he began building it, it had never rained. Building an enormous boat for over a hundred years, in a place nowhere near a river. Scripture doesn't describe in detail what the mockery around him must have been like. It simply calls him, in 2 Peter, 'a herald of righteousness.' The entire span of building was itself the message. But no one listened.
In the year he turned six hundred, the rain began — forty days and nights of it. Someone shut the door of the ark behind him after he entered with his family and the animals. After the water receded, he sent out a dove three times, and on the second attempt it returned with an olive leaf in its beak. The start of a new era. The first thing he did upon leaving the ark was build an altar and offer a burnt offering. God received that offering and made a covenant never again to destroy all living creatures, setting the rainbow as the sign of that covenant. One man's hundred years of faithfulness became the reason an entire age could begin again. Yet Scripture honestly records that afterward he lay drunk and naked — even someone who has passed the greatest test can stumble in a small place.
In years when not a drop fell, he built the ark for 120 years. Through mockery, his hammer did not stop.
