“I have seen the Lord!”
A woman freed from seven demons, the one who received the first news of the resurrection.
Scripture gives us only one line about Mary Magdalene's past — 'from whom seven demons had gone out.' That short line compresses the darkest chapter of her life. We don't know how she was bound, for how long, or how people saw her. But from the moment Jesus set her free, her life began completely anew. She helped support Jesus' ministry with her own resources, alongside other women, and followed him from Galilee all the way to Jerusalem.
The place where she shone brightest was the darkest hour. During the crucifixion, when nearly all the male disciples had fled, she stood at the foot of the cross with Mary the mother of Jesus, Salome, and other women. She didn't leave until the body was laid in the tomb. And as soon as the Sabbath ended, while it was still dark, she went to the tomb with spices — to anoint the body. Love had gone even beyond death.
But the tomb was empty. When two angels asked her, 'Why are you weeping?' she answered, 'They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.' Then a figure stood behind her. Mistaking him for the gardener, she asked, 'Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him.' He said one word: 'Mary.' In that one word she recognized him: 'Rabboni!' — my Teacher. The risen Lord's first encounter was with her — the one who had loved most deeply was the first to see. And she became the first to run and announce it to the disciples: 'I have seen the Lord.' A woman freed from seven demons became the first witness of the resurrection.
