Elijah was a rough man from Tishbe in Gilead. He first appears before King Ahab, and his first words are a declaration: 'There will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.' After that one line, a drought lasted three and a half years. He survived on food brought by ravens at the Kerith Ravine, and on the last flour of a widow in Zarephath.
On Mount Carmel he faced 850 prophets of Baal alone. 'If the Lord is God, follow him.' After pouring water over the altar three times to soak it thoroughly, he prayed one sentence — and fire fell from heaven and consumed the altar. The people cried out, 'The Lord — he is God! The Lord — he is God!' A place that split an era in two.
But his next chapter was not glory but collapse. At a single threat from Jezebel, he fled into the wilderness, lay down under a broom tree, and asked to die: 'Lord, I have had enough. Take my life.' The hero of Mount Carmel collapsed before one woman's threat. God fed him, let him sleep, and led him to Mount Horeb. There, after a great wind, an earthquake, and fire had passed — a gentle whisper came. In that silence he received his mission again: 'Anoint Elisha as your successor. And seven thousand still remain.' Not the end of glory, but the beginning of restoration.
