Nehemiah was cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes. Tasting the king's wine before he drank was one of the most trusted positions, and his life was safe and prosperous. But one day a brother arriving from his homeland brought him news: 'The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.'
That one line of news shook all his comfort. He sat down and wept, fasting for days, and prayed and waited for four months. When the king finally noticed his sad face and asked the reason, Nehemiah, after one breath of silent prayer, made his request: 'Send me.' All of Persia's resources were placed in his hand.
When he arrived in Jerusalem, the first thing he did was not to proclaim a vision but to inspect the wall alone at night. Only after seeing with his own eyes exactly what had collapsed did he assign the workers to sections and have them hold a trowel in one hand and a weapon in the other. Amid the mockery and threats of enemies, the wall was completed in 52 days. But his true final work was not the wall itself — it was gathering the people to hear the Law again, to repent, and to restore the Sabbath. What had collapsed was not only stone walls.
