Miriam was the sister who followed the basket from a distance when baby Moses was set afloat in the reeds. When Pharaoh's daughter found the basket, young Miriam approached and asked, 'Shall I call a Hebrew nurse for you?' In that way, Moses grew up again in his own mother's arms. A nation's destiny was changed by one sentence from a young girl.
Right after crossing the Red Sea, she took up a tambourine and sang, 'Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.' The first song of praise recorded in Exodus comes from a woman's hand. On the wilderness road, Miriam was called a prophetess who, together with Moses and Aaron, led the people.
But the closest seat held the most dangerous trap. When her brother Moses' authority grew, Miriam flared up: 'Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn't he also spoken through us?' In that moment she was struck with leprosy and isolated outside the camp for seven days. And it was her brother Moses' short prayer that restored her: 'O God, please heal her.' The place where the deepest wound was healed by the deepest love.
