Elijah
“I alone am left.”
The man who faced 850 alone — yet the next day asked to die under a broom tree.
Elijah was a rough man from Tishbe in Gilead. He first appears before King Ahab, and his first words are a declaration: 'There will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.' After that one line, a drought lasted three and a half years. He survived on food brought by ravens at the Kerith Ravine, and on the last flour of a widow in Zarephath.
On Mount Carmel he faced 850 prophets of Baal alone. 'If the Lord is God, follow him.' After pouring water over the altar three times to soak it thoroughly, he prayed one sentence — and fire fell from heaven and consumed the altar. The people cried out, 'The Lord — he is God! The Lord — he is God!' A place that split an era in two.
But his next chapter was not glory but collapse. At a single threat from Jezebel, he fled into the wilderness, lay down under a broom tree, and asked to die: 'Lord, I have had enough. Take my life.' The hero of Mount Carmel collapsed before one woman's threat. God fed him, let him sleep, and led him to Mount Horeb. There, after a great wind, an earthquake, and fire had passed — a gentle whisper came. In that silence he received his mission again: 'Anoint Elisha as your successor. And seven thousand still remain.' Not the end of glory, but the beginning of restoration.
He called down fire on Carmel, then asked to die under the broom tree. The most fervent know the deepest loneliness.
Defining Moments
The events that made this person who they were
Fire Comes Down on Mount Carmel
He stands alone before 850 prophets of Baal. 'If the Lord is God, follow him.' Fire falls from heaven onto the water he has poured, consuming the altar. The place that split an era in two.
Asking to Die Under the Broom Tree
At a single threat from Jezebel, he flees into the wilderness, lies down under a broom tree, and asks, 'Take my life.' The deepest collapse right after the greatest victory.
Rising Again Before a Gentle Whisper
On Mount Horeb, after a great wind, an earthquake, and fire pass by, a gentle whisper comes. Not in glory but in silence, he is given his mission again — and the comfort that seven thousand remain.
Personality
The colors revealed through their story
A Man of Uncompromising Proclamation
He speaks the truth plainly even before the king, unafraid. Even in a standoff of 850 to 1, he does not yield his faith.
A Humanity That Collapses Deeply After Great Glory
The hand that called down fire on Mount Carmel asks to die under a broom tree the very next day. Scripture records his collapse as honestly as his heroism.
An Ear That Hears the Gentle Whisper Rather Than the Loud Cry
He does not find God in the wind, earthquake, or fire. He rises again in silence — an ear that hears his true calling only after his own way has run out.
